Chemical Resistant Bund Linings

Bund coating, bund lining or bund lining systems all relate to products used for ‘secondary containment’. A secondary containment system is the area surrounding the primary containment (storage tank, vessel, or container). Its purpose is to protect the surrounding area by catching any spillage, leaks, or overflow if the primary containment system fails.

Often the materials being stored in the primary containment storage can be hazardous, such as wastewater, oils and other aggressive chemicals. If the primary containment vessel is compromised in any way, the performance of the secondary containment system – the ‘bund’ is critical to the safety of the surrounding area including the protection of local groundwater and soil.

Although there are many products on the market to meet the bund lining UK customer requirements, the subject can be complicated and difficult to negotiate to find which products are best for the job.

At CPRL we try to simplify this. Our chemical resistant bund lining services include a small range of effective bund products that are suitable for almost all applications and environments. The epoxy-based formulation is high performance, durable and cost-effective. This formulation provides outstanding protection against common chemical compounds from caustic fluids, fuels, acids and salts.

Typically, these bund coating products are used in environments such as chemical and printing works, bottling and canning factories, pharmaceutical production, water treatment works, oil storage and refineries, although this is not limited. A protective coating is provided to concrete, steel and masonry bund and containment vessels in almost all types of industrial and commercial facilities and buildings.

There are several key factors to consider when choosing and applying bund lining materials to ensure the durability, performance and service life of the specific bund lining or containment area protection system:

·        The condition and preparation of the bund surface to be coated

·        The integrity and strength of the substrate/ structure

·        The service temperature and temperature variations possible overtime

·        Chemical exposure and frequency

·        Access and maintenance regime and frequency

·        Proper selection and subsequent proper application of the bund coating system in accordance with the technical application guide

The chemical bund coatings come in a wide choice of colour and will provide lasting, superior protection and excellent chemical resistance to concrete and steel substrates and help prevent damage from common corrosive compounds.

 CPR 612 – Bund Coat 2

 CPR 614 – Bund Coat 3

  • This product is typically used as an internal bund wall lining for concrete or steel storage tanks and chemical bunds in industries such as chemical and printing works, bottling and canning factories, pharmaceutical production, water treatment works, oil refineries, etc.
  • A full range of Ral & BS colours are available upon request.
  • Bund Coat 3 is a rapid curing, two-pack, solvent-free epoxy coating with outstanding resistance to aggressive acids, solvents and alcohols, e.g., 96-99% Sulphuric Acid, Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Methanol.
  • A coat of CPR 401 – Concrete Primer – Epoxy WB is recommended on absorbent concrete surfaces (apply in accordance with CPR 401 – Concrete Primer – Epoxy WB datasheet).
  • For steel substrates, CPR 614 – Bund Coat 3 may be applied directly (see also surface preparation advice)
  • Apply by brush, short pile roller or airless spray at a nominal rate of 0.3 to 0.5kg/m² per coat, depending on the overall dry film thickness required.
  • Should a non-slip finish be required, then a broadcast of graded Quartz or Aluminium Oxide shall be made immediately after the first coat.

Other CPRL products in our range suitable for bund lining

 ·  CPR 605 Self Sealing Acid Resistant Screed – rapid curing, resin-rich, three-pack epoxy screed. This self-sealing material is often used for bund linings as well as an acid-resistant floor coating for chemical and printing works, dye-works, pharmaceutical production etc.

 ·   CPR 602 Acid Resistant Epoxy Paint – rapid curing, two-pack, solvent-free epoxy coating. The product is typically used as an internal lining for concrete or steel storage tanks; chemical bunds, acid-resistant floor/wall coating for chemical and printing works, bottling and canning factories, water treatment works, oil refineries, etc.

·    CPR 603 Acid Resistant Epoxy Laminating Resin – high-performance two-pack epoxy resin. Generally used in conjunction with multidirectional roving or other reinforcing mesh. It is also suitable for chemical bunds, effluent tanks, steel or concrete storage tanks.

·    CPR 606 Self Levelling Acid Resistant Screed – rapid-curing, resin-rich, three-pack slurry. The slurry is typically used for heavy-duty, acid-resistant flooring e.g., loading bays, chemical bunds, sewage treatment works, wet working environments (internal or external).
