What is an Epoxy Damp Proof Membrane?

An epoxy damp proof membrane is a 2-part surface primer. After being mixed, it can be brushed onto concrete floors and screeds to provide a protective layer that enhances the durability, UV resistance, abrasion resistance, and strength of floor coatings.

Our two-part epoxy damp proof membrane provides excellent adhesion to any damp cementitious surface. Once it has dried, the membrane provides a dry barrier against moisture below.

These properties make it an excellent choice for damp proofing underground car parks, basement garages, retaining walls, tunnels, and cellars. It is also useful for applying between a concrete floor and a vinyl or timber overlay, to ensure moisture does not move into the top layers of your flooring.

CPR 400 – Epoxy Damp Proof Membrane is  our two-part epoxy damp proof membrane and comes in multiple sizes including:

  • Epoxy damp proof membrane 1kg
  • Epoxy damp proof membrane 5kg
  • Epoxy damp proof membrane 10kg

Benefits of Using An Epoxy Damp Proof Membrane

Here are just a few of the advantages of applying an Epoxy Damp Proof Membrane to a surface:

Can be used as both a primer and waterproofing agent –You can apply epoxy damp proof membrane as a standalone waterproofing agent or add a layer of paint on top. It is also a great choice for waterproofing a floor before laying timber, vinyl, or carpet on top.

Cures very quickly – A two-part epoxy damp proof membrane can be applied to any damp cementitious surface and cures in as little as 12 hours. Once it has cured, it creates an impermeable layer which prevents moisture from traveling through to the surface of the concrete slab.

Works well as a remedial solution –You can apply an epoxy damp proof paint to a concrete floor that already has a significant damp problem in order to seal it. It is a much cheaper option than digging up the existing floor and replacing it completely.

Excellent adhesion to a variety of materials – Epoxy damp proof membrane can be applied to a wide variety of materials, including concrete, brick, masonry, concrete blocks, and fiberglass.

Protects your concrete floor- The dry membrane will help to protect the surface from bacterial, chemical, and abrasion damage. If a layer of paint is applied on top of the primer, it will enjoy an increased lifespan due to improve adherence.

Safe for the environment – Our liquid epoxy damp proof membrane products are water-based, non-toxic, and non-flammable. They are an environmentally friendly option suitable for modern buildings.

What Is An Epoxy Concrete Primer?

Concrete primer paint, also called concrete primer sealer, is primarily used to improve the adhesive properties of concrete, so paint can stick to it more easily. This increases the longevity of your painted concrete surfaces.

A concrete primer sealer will also penetrate the pores of the substrate, sealing any holes in the concrete which may have formed. This reduces the permeability of your concrete floor, which helps to protect it from damage caused by chemicals, bacteria, and water.

Epoxy concrete primers contain epoxy resins – polyepoxides, which are a type of reactive polymer made from epoxides. Once applied, an epoxy concrete primer forms a mechanical bond within the pores of the concrete surface. This seals the surface and gives the paint you apply an even surface it can easily adhere to.

Epoxy products are the perfect primer for concrete floors as they are inexpensive and dry quickly. Applying an epoxy concrete primer before painting is simple as they have thin viscosity.

We stock several epoxy concrete primer paints. They are solvent free and suitable for concrete with a low moisture up 7% (standard primer). They include:

What Are The Benefits Of Using An Epoxy Concrete Primer?

There are several benefits associated with using epoxy concrete primer:

  • Easy to apply – Epoxy primers are quite thin, which makes them easy to apply.
  • Strong chemical bond – The thin viscosity of epoxy concrete primer makes it better at penetrating into the concrete substrate. This creates a better bond and improved adhesion, which delivers a longer lasting and more durable concrete coating.
  • Air bubbles are eliminated – The epoxy primer can move into any air bubbles and pinholes in the surface of the concrete easily, providing excellent protection to your concrete surfaces.
  • Excellent moisture resistance –Epoxy primers form a strong waterproof barrier for concrete flooring. This makes epoxy primers a great choice for concrete flooring exposed to moisture. Additionally, some epoxy primers can be applied on concrete that has not fully dried after being cleaned or acid etched, e.g. CPR 400 – Epoxy Damp Proof Membrane
  • Acid resistant, oil blocking, and anti-static primers available
There are several types of epoxy concrete primers available with special properties for specific applications.

What Are MMA Concrete Primers?

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an organic compound that is used in many paints, coatings, and adhesive resin formulations. It is a very useful additive as it enhances the durability, UV resistance, abrasion resistance, and strength of floor coatings.

MMA primers are similar to Sub-Zero primers, in that they can be used in low temp applications. They are fast drying, which is useful for commercial or industrial projects where you need to apply a new floor coating quickly for a fast return to service.

In addition to being used in concrete primers, you will find MMA in everything from floor polishes and adhesives to construction materials and inks.

There are several types of MMA concrete primers with different characteristics. They include:

  • CPR 406 – MMA Concrete Primer
CPR 406 MMA Concrete Primer can be used as a primer for concrete, steel, masonry, and marine plywood.
  • CPR 409 – MMA Primer for Oil Based Surfaces
MMA Primer for Oil Based Surfaces is typically used as a primer for Asphalt and Tarmac substrates. It is particularly useful for car parks, playgrounds, driveways, and other outdoor environments.
  • CPR 408 – MMA Damp Tolerant Concrete Primer
CPR 408 MMA Damp Tolerant Concrete Primer has been developed as a primer for damp concrete and other masonry substrates. It is most useful for basements, swimming pool surrounds, and buildings which are sometimes exposed to damp.

Benefits Of Using MMA Concrete Primers

There are several advantages to using an MMA concrete primer before applying paint. These advantages include:

Protects your concrete floor

Although concrete may seem like a durable surface it can be damaged by bacterial and chemical corrosion, fire, calcium leaching, physical damage, and chemical damage. Adding an MMA concrete primer and top coat of paint will protect the concrete by reducing its permeability.  MMA paints are particularly good at resisting chemical corrosion which makes them an excellent choice for garages, factories, and carparks.

Floor coatings will last much longer

Concrete primers are useful for creating a tight bond between concrete and paint, ensuring proper adhesion of the top coat. This greatly improves the longevity of your painted surfaces.

Rapid cure even at low temperatures
MMA concrete primers will cure very quickly, which is useful of you are using it in a busy industrial or commercial operating environment. It can be applied in temperatures as low as -10°C and can be driven on within 2 hours of application.

Quick and easy to apply

The medium viscosity of MMA concrete primers make them very easy to apply. They can be brushed on like any normal paint.

What Is The Best MMA Concrete Primer?

There is no simple answer to the question “what is the best MMA concrete primer?”. The ideal product will vary based on your intended usage. So, if you are applying paint in your basement, you may benefit from using CPR 408 while a general purpose application could use CPR 406.
